Legion’s suicide prevention mission inspires artwork

The Gift of Gratitude Foundation recognizes veterans, peace officers, first responders and medical personnel who serve with honor and selflessness with works of art inspired by stories of faith, prayer, virtue and courage.

Douglas and Lori McDermott, founders of The Gift of Gratitude Foundation, presented a religious work of art to The American Legion during its 105th National Convention on Aug. 29. The artwork was inspired by the Legion’s Be the One suicide prevention mission.

“The Lord Has a Better Way” was unveiled on the convention stage in the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans.

“Our concept is that of reach out to the one, one at a time,” Douglas said. “It’s the story put into art of Elijah the prophet – the only prophet of God who asked to have his life taken. And the answer that the Lord gave was by sending a messenger and letting him know that his mission was not yet completed.”

National Commander Daniel Seehafer, a pastor, accepted the artwork on behalf of The American Legion. It’s through pastors and active-duty chaplains that Douglas said “the story of Elijah and his darkest time” can be shared with veterans and servicemembers facing suicide ideation. A story that inspires everyone to listen to those in crisis.
