Military values inspire songwriting for Army veteran

Houston Bernard is proud to carry on two family traditions – music and service to country. The award-winning country music artist and U.S. Army veteran served as Master of Ceremonies for the opening general session of the 105th National Convention in New Orleans on Tuesday, Aug. 27.

“My time in the military has been defined by patriotism, camaraderie, integrity, commitment and family,” said Bernard, a member of American Legion Post 273 in Burlington, Mass. “These values have shaped me and the person I am today and continue to guide my actions.”

Bernard’s songwriting and music reflect these five values. He opened the convention floor with “In My Blood,” a song about his family’s line of military service and sacrifices that strengthened his “resolve to serve with pride and dedication.” Other songs of his, including “Freedom,” “People We Are” and “American Dream, are also influenced by his military service.

In his remarks to convention attendees, Bernard highlighted his values heard in his music:

Patriotism. “Joining the Army for me was fueled by a deep sense of patriotism – serving our country, defending our freedoms and being part of something larger than myself was an honor that I will always cherish.”

Camaraderie. “This sense of brotherhood and sisterhood is a source of strength providing support in times of need and joy and times of triumph. It’s this camaraderie that helps us navigate the toughest of times and emerge stronger on the order side.”

Integrity.  “It means doing the right thing when no one is watching. It means being honest, trustworthy and reliable. In the Army, integrity is the foundation upon which we build our trust in one another.”

Commitment. This extends beyond individuals in uniform. But also, to their families. Military families embody resiliency and strength. They endure long deployments, frequent relocations and the uncertainties that come with military life. Their support and sacrifice are integral to the success of the missions. Without their unwavering commitment, our service would be infinitely more challenging.”

Family. “I’m very proud that my music reflects my values, including my love of family … my wife and daughter who support me unconditionally.”

Bernard continues his service by performing for veterans and active duty servicemembers. It’s his way of saying thank you and honoring their ongoing sacrifices.

“Every performance is a chance to bring joy and a sense of connection to those who have given so much,” Bernard said. “The gratitude I receive in return is immeasurable, and it reinforces my commitment to serve our veterans in any way I can.”
