Tales From The Deep

It came through World War II, the Korean and Vietnam conflicts, a fire, one of the biggest hurricanes on record, an oil spill, a collision, a run-in with a sitting president, a brush with the King, Elvis Presley, a stow-a-way chicken from Knots Berry Farm, a colossal-sized band-aid on its stern and a hydrogen bomb. Some believe the ship was the target that would have started the Vietnam War if two U.S. destroyers hadn't gotten in the way. It even had Hollywood calling. But wait... there's more.

A FINE GRAY RAIN: In the Shadow of Mount Pinatubo

Clark Air Base and Subic Bay Navy Base in the Philippines were virtual Edens. Life for American military and civilians stationed there was idyllic and serene. But in 1991, an almost forgotten Mount Pinatubo awoke after more than five centuries of dormancy. Seismic activity increased and a team of volcanologists was called in to monitor the situation. Soon, a mass evacuation of Clark was enacted sending more than 15,000 personnel to Subic Bay. Two days later Mount Pinatubo began a series of massive eruptions until finally an enormous eruption chased all remaining personnel from Clark, as ash and rock rained down and earthquakes repeatedly rattled the area. Unbelievably, at this very same time a typhoon blew in off the Pacific. Day turned into night with the rain-laden ash blocking out the sun. Buildings collapsed. Bridges swept away as rivers flooded. An ashen slurry washed across Clark AB covering the base in several inches to several feet of wet ash. Much of the local populace took flight. This is the author's exciting firsthand account of the period leading up to the destruction and subsequent departure of American forces from the Philippines.
