2024 Legion Baseball regionals: Wednesday roundup

Defending American Legion World Series champion League City (Tex.) Post 554 took an opening round victory and 15 of the 32 games were shutout victories as regional playoffs began on Wednesday at eight sites in the 64-team tournament.

Here are Wednesday’s results and Thursday’s schedule:

Region 1: Northeast

Game 1: Hudson (Mass.) Post 100 d. Hampden (Me.) Post 213, 6-5. Daniel DeMerjian (2 hits, double, 1 RBI), Chase Barrett (double, 2 RBIs) and starter and winner Chase Donahue (double, 6 innings) led Hudson to a 6-run top of the 7th inning and reliever Ryan Graf (1 inning) got the save by stranding the potential tying run on second base.

Game 2: Cumberland (R.I.) Post 14 d. West Hartford (Conn.) Post 96, 5-4. Starter and winner Ben Jahnz (5 innings), Jack LaRose (4 hits, double, 2 RBIs), Andy Ray (2 hits, 1 RBI), Ryan Thompson (double, RBI) and reliever Jaiden Torres (2/3 innings, save) led Cumberland, which scored the first five runs of the game. Jack Kane had three hits for West Hartford.

Game 3: Portsmouth (N.H.) Post 6 d. South Burlington (Vt.), 4-0. Starter and winner Jason Pissonnault (2-hitter, 5 strikeouts), Mathew Minkler (3 hits) and Timmy Avery (2 hits, 1 RBI) led Portsmouth.

Game 4: Shrewsbury (Mass.) Post 397 d. Sweeney (N.H.) Post 2, 10-5. Starter and winner Tedy Cove (5 1/3 innings, 0 earned runs, 5 strikeouts), Noah Basgaard (2 hits, double, 3 RBIs) and Preston Dodds (2 hits) led Shrewsbury.

Game 2: Covington (Ga.) Post 32 d. Camden (S.C.) Post 17, 1-0. Starter and winner Blake Hughes threw a six-hitter with six strikeouts and Landon Harpe drew a two-out bases-loaded walk in the second inning for the game's only run for Covington.

Game 3: Wayne Co. (N.C.) Post 11 d. San Juan (P.R.) Post 160, 3-0. Starter and winner Casey Culbreth (2-hitter, 13 strikeouts) and Rett Johnson (2 hits, triple, 2 RBIs) led Wayne County.

Game 4: Chesapeake (Va.) Post 280 d. Randolph Co. (N.C.) Post 45, 16-2 (5 innings). Tanner Schaedel had 3 RBIs and 3 hits, Brett Beasley had 3 hits and 2 RBIs and Mike Urbaniak also had 2 RBIs as Chesapeake cruised.
