2022 Legion Baseball Regionals: Day 4 roundup

Nineteen teams remain entering the final day of the 2022 American Legion Baseball regionals, as three teams — Camden (S.C.) Post 17, Troy (Ala.) Post 70, and Petaluma (Calif.) Post 28 — lost for the first time in the double-elimination tournament on Saturday.

That leaves five teams needing just one win on Sunday to advance to the 95th American Legion World Series: Shrewsbury (Mass.) Post 397 in the Northeast; Chesapeake (Va.) Post 280 in the Mid-Atlantic; Midland (Mich.) Post 165 in the Great Lakes; Omaha (Neb.) Post 1 in the Central Plains; and two-time defending ALWS champion Idaho Falls (Idaho) Post 56 in the Northwest.

Here’s a look at Saturday’s results.

 

Region 1: Northeast

At Shrewsbury, Mass.

Game 12: Cumberland (R.I.) Post 14 d. Essex (Vt.) Post 91, 5-2 (Essex eliminated): Starter George Sukatos (6 innings) picked up the win and Michael Clapprood (1 inning) the save for Post 14, whose offense was led by Jack Larose (2 hits, home run, 3 RBIs), Luke Plumer (2 hits) and Anthony Martin (2 hits).

Game 13: Shrewsbury (Mass.) Post 397 d. Greece (N.Y.) Post 468, 12-4 (Greece eliminated): Shrewsbury remained undefeated in the regional as reliever Jack Roche (4 innings) picked up the win. Post 397’s offense was led by A.J. Hamm (2 hits, 3 RBIs), Ryan Walton (2 hits, 2 RBIs) and James Railsback (2 hits, double, 2 RBIs).

Game 14: Cumberland (R.I.) Post 14 vs. Shrewsbury (Mass.) Post 397, 1 p.m.

Game 15 (if necessary), 5 p.m.

 

Region 2: Mid-Atlantic

At Morgantown, W. Va.

Game 12: Frederick (Md.) Post 11 d. Philipsburg (Pa.) Post 437, 3-2 (8 innings) (Philipsburg eliminated): Kade Linton hit two solo home runs, tying the score at 2 in the sixth inning and notching the winning run in the eighth.

Game 13: Chesapeake (Va.) Post 280 d. Allentown (N.J.), 5-4 (Allentown eliminated): Nick Valentin’s two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning helped Post 280 remain undefeated in the regional.

Game 14: Frederick (Md.) Post 11 vs. Chesapeake (Va.) Post 280, 1 p.m.

Region 3: Southeast

At Asheboro, N.C.

Game 12: Wilmington (N.C.) Post 10 d. Randolph County (N.C.) Post 45, 15-5 (5 innings) (Randolph County eliminated): Reliever Coleton Norris (4 1-3 innings, 4 strikeouts) picked up the win for Post 10, whose offense was led by Connor Kane (3 hits, home run, 6 RBIs), Jaxson Croom (3 hits, double, 3 RBIs), Logan Ponnett (2 hits, home run, 2 RBIs) and Kayden Crawford (2 hits, 2 RBIs).

Game 13: Rock Hill (S.C.) Post 34 d. Camden (S.C.) Post 17, 3-2: In a game that didn’t end until 1:35 a.m. local time early Sunday morning due to a lightning delay, Max Gladstone (6 2-3 innings) got the win and Roman Edwards (1-3 inning) the save. Ethan Belk’s three stolen bases led the Rock Hill offense, which scored three unearned runs to remain in contention.

Game 15: Game 14 winner vs. Camden (S.C.) Post 17, 4:30 p.m.

 

Region 4: Mid-South

At Pelham, Ala.

Game 12: Tupelo (Miss.) Post 49 d. Jefferson City (Mo.) Post 5, 7-5 (Jefferson City eliminated): Taylor Ballard (5 1-3 innings) picked up the win and Jack Taylor (1 1-3 innings, 2 strikeouts) the save for Post 49, whose offense was led by Davis Oswalt (2 hits, double, 3 RBIs) and Stone Collier (2 hits, 2 RBIs).

Game 13: Gonzales (La.) Post 81 d. Troy (Ala.) Post 70, 5-3: Luke Conerly (6 innings) picked up the win and Slade Zeppuhar (1 inning) the save for Post 81, whose offense was led by Kael Babin (2 hits, 1 RBI) and Lax Melancon (2 hits, 1 RBI). The loss was the first in this year’s regional for Post 70.

Game 14: Tupelo (Miss.) Post 49 vs. Gonzales (La.) Post 81, 2 p.m.

Game 15: Game 14 winner vs. Troy (Ala.) Post 70, 5 p.m.

 

Region 5: Great Lakes

At Midland, Mich.

Game 12: Yeager/Benson (Ohio) Post 199 d. Gladwin County (Mich.) Post 171, 5-4 (Gladwin County eliminated): Austin Dennis had three hits, including the game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the sixth inning, to lead Post 199.

Game 13: Midland (Mich.) Post 165 d. Eau Claire (Wis.), 6-1 (Eau Claire eliminated): Starter Tanner Sonntag (6 innings, 5 strikeouts) picked up the win for Post 165, whose offense was led by Logan McCoy (3 hits, 3 RBIs), Braylen Laverty (3 hits, 2 doubles, 1 RBI), Zachary Parker (2 hits), Brody Krzysiak (2 hits) and Nolan Sanders (2 hits). The win kept Midland undefeated in this year’s regional.

Game 14: Yeager/Benson (Ohio) Post 199 vs. Midland (Mich.) Post 165, 1 p.m.

Region 6: Central Plains

At Rapid City, S.D.

Game 12: Millard South (Neb.) Post 374 d. Mankato (Minn.) Post 11, 7-6 (10 innings) (Mankato eliminated): Ashton Jorges singled in the game-winning run in the bottom of the 10th for Post 374, while reliever Brayden Smith (5 2-3 innings) picked up the win and hit a 3-run home run.

Game 13: Omaha (Neb.) Post 1 d. St. Michael (Minn.) Post 567, 1-0 (St. Michael eliminated): Reliever Mitchell Collins (1 2-3 innings) picked up the win for Post 1, who scored the game's only run in the bottom of the sixth when Coby Hatcher doubled and later scored on Jack Thiele’s sacrifice fly. The win sets up an all-Nebraska final between undefeated Post 1 and Post 374.

Region 7: Northwest

At Gillette, Wyo.

Game 12: Cheyenne (Wyo.) Post 6 d. Billings (Mont.) Post 4, 3-2 (Billings eliminated): Wyatt Haught (2 2-3 innings) picked up the win for Post 6, whose offense was led by Colter McAnelly (1 hit, 1 RBI), Zack Costopoulos (1 hit, 1 RBI) and Julian Romero (1 hit, 1 RBI).

Game 13: Idaho Falls (Idaho) Post 56 d. Medford (Ore.) Post 15, 8-7 (Medford eliminated): Dax Whitney (2 1-3 innings) picked up the win for Post 56, whose offense was led by Elliot Jones (3 hits, 1 RBI), Nate Rose (3 hits, 2 doubles, 1 RBI) and Davin Luce (2 hits, 1 RBI). Post 56 remained undefeated in this year’s regional.

Region 8: Western

At Fairfield, Calif.

Game 12: League City (Tex.) Post 554 d. Tucson (Ariz.) Post 7, 9-3 (Tucson eliminated): Brandon Vassallo threw a 4-hitter with five strikeouts for Post 554, whose offense was led by Kobey Allison (2 hits, 2 RBIs) and Albert Garza (2 hits).

Game 13: Kapolei (Haw.) Post 1 d. Petaluma (Calif.) Post 28, 13-11: Reliever Brylan Nakano (2 innings) was the winner for Post 1, whose offense was led by Kaulana Quinlan (2 hits, double, 3 RBIs), Kamea Chun (2 hits, 3 RBIs), Jeremiah Lono (2 doubles, 2 RBIs) and Hoku Gaspar (2 hits, double, 2 RBIs). The win kept Post 1 in the hunt for the regional title and was the first regional loss for Post 28.
