USS MISSISSIPPI (CGN 40) Memorial Ocean Springs MS The main mast of the USS Mississippi (CGN 40) is part of the Vietnam War Memorial at Ocean Springs, Mississippi. The Memorial Site is located on U.S. Highway 90 East (also known as Bienville Blvd). The main mast of the Virginia-class nuclear-powered guided missile cruiser USS Mississppi (CGN 40) has been installed in what is rapidly becoming a very large veteran's memorial park in downtown Ocean Springs, Mississippi. The USS Mississippi (CGN 40) is the fourth ship to be named after this state. One submarine (submarines are submarines or boats, NOT ships) was named after the state of Mississippi as well. In her years in active service in the US Navy (1978-1996), the cruiser MISSISSIPPI earned several Ship Awards, as follows: "Top Row- Navy Unit Commendation (2) Second Row - Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation - Navy Battle "E" Ribbon (5) - Navy Expeditionary Service Medal Third Row - National Defense Service Medal - Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal - Southwest Asia Service Medal (3) Fourth Row - Armed Forces Service Medal - Sea Service Deployment Ribbon (2)- Coast Guard Special Operations Ribbon Fifth Row - NATO Medal - Kwuait Liberation Medal (Saudia Arabia) - Kwuait Liberation Medal (Kwuait) The main mast of the USS Mississippi CGN-40 is mounted at the site of the Mississippi Vietnam Veterans Memorial. It is on the grounds of the Oceans Springs Civic Center in Oceans Springs, Mississippi. A supporting base was provided by the Mississippi Vietnam Veterans Memorial Committee, Inc. A team of Seabees helped raise the 62 foot section of steel. It sits on a concrete pedestal near the memorial wall remembering those Mississippians who were killed in the Vietnam War.
