In Remembrance

In Remembrance

"In Remembrance" of the final moments of two Navy veterans KIA who were former residents of Plainville, Kansas. LTJG Norman Wilkerson was a navigator on a reconnaissance plane monitoring the Korean War armistice when the plane was shot down over the Sea of Japan by North Korean MiGs on April 15, 1969. There were no survivors and only the bodies of two of 31 crew members were recovered; Wilkerson’s was not recovered. Because of these circumstances, he is considered a casualty of the Korean War. HM 2 Corpsman Christopher Monroe Pyle was on a USMC patrol in South Vietnam on May 28, 1969, when a booby trap was tripped. He was going to the aid of those wounded when another booby trap was tripped, killing him. This was set to abide by the “Lest We Forget” engraved on the 2019 Post 187 centennial monument, set in front of the Plainville Township Hall.
