Tinian Island 2nd Marine Division WWII Monument

Tinian Island 2nd Marine Division WWII Monument

When US Marine and American Legion PUFL Michael L. Emerson visited the WWII battle site and Army Air Corps airport (where both Atomic Bombs dropped on Japan were loaded) in March 2011, he noticed that there was a monument missing from all of the units who took the island from the Japanese during the WWII battle of Tinian. Approval to build/add a monument to honor the Marines of the 2nd Marine Division at the Tinian WWII airport was achieved with the help of Don Farrell, a retired US Air Force member who lived on the Tinian Island. Now all of the units that fought and served on Tinian Island during WWII are remembered and honored. The new monument was dedicated by US Marines and other veterans on July 1, 2011.
