The United States Marine Corps War Memorial

The United States Marine Corps War Memorial

This monument is better known as the Iwo Jima Memorial and depicts one of the most historic battles of World War II, the battle of Iwo Jima. The statue is based on one of the most famous photographs of World War II, the raising of the flag on Mount Suribachi on Iwo Jima, taken by Joe Rosenthal. This Parris Island monument is one of three one third sized models of the famous monument located near the Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, DC. The original in Washington lists every war in which a Marine has served, this replica does not but is still dedicated to all Marines in all wars since 1775.
