Warren County War Memorial

Warren County War Memorial

The memorial was built in 1998 to honor those men and women of Warren County, New Jersey who gave their lives for their country, during times of war. Nine black stones bear the names of local veterans who died in WWI,WWII, Korean War and the Vietnam War. As of March 2000, there were 289 names on the memorial. The center stone honors the veterans who died in earlier wars, whose records were very difficult to verify. The gold badges represent the branches of service, Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard and Merchant Marine. The memorial is made of black granite from India. The surrounding walkway of paving stones and the granite benches were made in Warren County, NJ. Lights were installed to reflect up on the stones at night. The American and POW/MIA flags were also installed at the time of the dedication. A time capsule was placed in the ground in front of the memorial and contained historical papers and items from the dedication. It was dug up in 2008 on the 10th anniversary. The memorial was funded by private donations and material donations and volunteer labor was used to construct the memorial. The memorial is open to the public and is a place to pause, reflect, and remember our veterans who paid the price of our freedom and liberty. A narrative sound system has been installed with various buttons for each war era. In 2006, two additional black granite stones were added to honor Operation Iraqi freedom and Enduring Freedom Afghanistan veterans. In 2007, a retaining wall was installed behind the memorial for color/honor guards to stand on during ceremonies along with service flags and poles. Sod was laid around the memorial in 2008. In 2009 top soil was added by the holly bushes to grow flowers. A sprinkler system was installed in 2011. All maintenance is performed by volunteer Veterans. Also present at this memorial is a bench provided by Rolling Thunder NJ Chapter #3 and a memorial and flag pole by Purple Heart NJ Chapter #700.
