Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument
The monument is made of bronze and represents a youthful soldier and sailor garbed in the uniform of the Civil War, and grouped beneath the folds of a great flag. Its granite base is devoid of ornament excepting three bronze tablets. One base is engraved with the following: "Especially I desire that by every proper means a pure attachment to our republican institutions shall be formed in the minds of the scholars." A single tablet records the names of former student who died for the Union, 29 died for the cause. Two remaining tablets record names of 164 that served. Three died in Andersonville. Seven fought for the Confederacy, their names are excluded from the monument.
