Created in 1862 to provide free burial of Union Soldiers in the Civil War. Two-hundred and thirty-six Union Soldiers were eventually interred. In 1876, the Allegheny County Ladies Memorial Association commissioned a 16 foot sandstone sculpture composed of an allegorical figure of “Grief “. It features bas-relief carvings of soldiers and sailors alternating with bronze plaques with four carved mortars.
