The New Jersey Vietnam Veteran's Memorial is a bowl shaped area that is entered through a tunnel. You enter a lower brick paved courtyard area where the centerpiece is a beautiful statue designed by sculptor Thomas Jay Warren. The larger than life sculpture consists of a field nurse pressing a bandage to the chest of a wounded soldier while another stares over the nurse's shoulder, watching the life of his friend slip away. The upper level, accessed by a concrete stairway, is a circular walkway whose walls are made of 366 black granite panels and which are carved the names of the 1,548 New Jersey warriors that were killed or missing in action during the Vietnam War. The groundbreaking for the memorial took place in May 7, 1989, the 14th anniversary of the official end of the war, but the final dedication did not take place until May 7, 1995.
