A small Catholic college in St. Marys, Kan., had over 700 of its alumni serve in World War I, with 19 of them making the ultimate sacrifice. Grateful alumni funded construction of the memorial arch to honor them all. They paid special tribute to alumnus Lt. William Fitzsimons, the first American officer killed in the war. The arch spans the old main entrance to the college and therefore faces the main road. Anyone travelling along U.S. 24 cannot miss the arch, which is about 75 feet north of the road.
