The Ultimate Sacrifice

The Ultimate Sacrifice
Standing prominently on the main campus of the University of Connecticut, The Ultimate Sacrifice Memorial honors UConn alumni who have fallen while serving our country. The idea for the memorial came to Myles Martel ’65 during a visit to the campus in 2007. His vision for the memorial was to create a “respectful and lasting tribute to all our alumni who have made and will make ‘The Ultimate Sacrifice’.” The Memorial is an enlarged replica of the headstones at Arlington National Cemetery. It is constructed with brick, limestone, and marble—drawn from the same quarry used for the Arlington National Cemetery and the Lincoln Memorial—and features a handcrafted “eternal flame.” The corresponding "Role of Honor" containing the names of the fallen is located in the West end of the Alumni Center lobby.
