Identity verification system one of only two that veterans can use to access VA websites and apps.
Last July the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs announced it was phasing out My HealtheVet and DS Logon sign-in options in favor of two new options, Login.gov and ID.me, in order to help the department offer stronger protections for veterans, families and caregivers.
All VA websites and apps are impacted by the change, including VA.gov, the My HealtheVet website, and the VA: Health and Benefits mobile app. Veterans who use My HealtheVet will still be able to use the My HealtheVet website after March 4 but will need to start signing in with a Login.gov or ID.me account. The deadline to switch from DS Logon to ID.me or Login.gov remains Sept. 30, 2025.
ID.me now is conducting outreach to assist veterans with signing up for an ID.me account. Here are some resources made available by VA and ID.me to assist with the ID.me account creation process:
· Step-by-step instructions for creating an ID.me account.
· Video: How to verify your identity for Veterans Affairs using Self-Service
· Video: How to verify your identity for Veterans Affairs on a video call
· Video: How to verify your identity for Veterans Affairs while living outside the US
· ID.me Help Center: Veterans Affairs and ID.me
Once a veteran is ready to verify his or her identify for VA using ID.me, he or she will need:
· A device with internet access and a camera
· An email address
· Identity documents
· Social Security number
The identity document requirements depend on the organization or website you need to access and if you’re verifying using Self-Service or on an extended video call. For self-service, you will need a primary document, specifically a driver’s license, state ID, passport, or passport card.
Those who have difficulty verifying with self-service, need additional document options or live outside the United States will need to verify on an extended video call using two primary documents, or one primary and one secondary document (utility bills, vehicle registration and tax forms).
