First DSO symposium set for Virginia Oct. 20-25

Department service officers nationwide to descend on Leesburg’s National Conference Center for training developed by American Legion partner Bergmann & Moore.

American Legion-accredited department service officers (DSOs) from across the nation will head to Leesburg, Va., Oct 20-25 for the Legion’s first-ever DSO symposium. The week includes four days of training, as well as a graduation event during Friday’s closing ceremony, and will take place at The National Conference Center.

The event will feature top-tier service officer training developed and presented by the national law firm Bergmann & Moore, The American Legion’s education and litigation partner. The symposium will include lectures, exercises and speakers tailored to department service officers.

The purpose of the symposium is to equip each state’s DSO with the tools so more Legion advocates can quickly obtain the maximum amount of U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs benefits for veterans and their families.

Included in the four days of training are:

·       A session on The American Legion’s Be the One veteran suicide prevention program.

·       A live U.S. Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims appellate panel oral argument and an interactive discussion with the court’s chief judge.

·       A VA Regional Office Hearing exercise.

·       A session on the PACT Act.

·       The Appeals Modernization Act (AMA) and strategies for choosing AMA options.

The week will wrap up Oct. 25 with a graduation ceremony that will include remarks from VA Principal Deputy Under Secretary Mike Frueh.
