Legion post helps provide Super Bowl party for soldiers stationed in South Korea

Post 38 teams with VFW Post 9985 to provide watch party for soldiers serving in United Nations Command Security Battalion-Joint Security Area.

While millions of Americans nationwide watched the Philadelphia Eagles roll past the Kansas City Chiefs last Sunday in Super Bowl LIX, a smaller group watched the game from more than 7,100 miles away. And The American Legion had a hand in turning the viewing into a watch party.

American Legion Col. Lewis L. Millet Post 38, located in Osan Air Base, South Korea, teamed with Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9985 to provide a Super Bowl party for soldiers of the United Nations Command Security Battalion-Joint Security Area (UNCSB-JSA). The party took place at Camp Bonifas, which is just 1,300 feet south of the southern boundary of the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ).

Donald Wong, historian of Post 38 and public affairs officer for the Department of the Philippines, said via email it was the first time the post had hosted such an event for the soldiers and wrote it did so to “support our troops serving on the DMZ. Supporting our troops who are providing security.”

The post provided food and prizes for the soldiers who attended the event. And Wong said interacting with the soldiers also provided a way to share the mission of The American Legion.

“These soldiers are veterans,” Wong wrote. “(It’s) good exposures for The American Legion and good for recruiting purposes. Strength in numbers.”
