Find your tribe

Retired Army Col. Adam Rocke and retired Army Gen. Paul Funk II share how one’s tribe can help with improving mental health, finding a job and more on this week’s episode of Tango Alpha Lima.

Retired Army Col. Adam Rocke and retired Army Gen. Paul Funk II help guide the efforts of Katie’s Way, which aims to provide world-class behavioral health care to the military community with a focus on optimizing mental fitness.

“One size doesn’t fit all, it’s an individual plan,” Funk explained during this week’s episode of the American Legion Tango Alpha Lima podcast. On the episode, Rocke and Funk talked about their involvement in Katie’s Way, how it correlates to the Legion’s Be the One mission to prevent veteran suicide, transition challenges and more.

During his time in the Army, Rocke worked for the Soldier for Life program.

“I’ve talked with audiences globally about transition,” said Rocke, a member of Post 176 in Springfield, Va. “Defining what you want to do when you get out is probably the hardest part. You have to accept that finding a job is a job in itself.”

Funk advised using your tribe, or network. (“Tribe” author Sebastian Junger was a previous guest on the podcast. Listen to his episode here.)

“If you don’t know exactly what you want to do, find your tribe and them with them about it,” he said. “Reach out and don’t think that you are bothering someone. Let your tribe help you.”

Rocke highlighted the Be the One mission and how it relates to transitioning servicemembers whether they are looking for a career or mental health support.

“It takes a village,” he said. “Like the general said, ‘Find your tribe’ and let’s connect them with the right resources. That is why the Be the One campaign and The America Legion are vital right now for what we are doing as a VSO.”

In celebration of National Women’s History Month, podcast co-host Stacy Pearsall invites you to a special challenge for Rosie the Riveter Day, which is Friday.

“Simply roll up your sleeves, strike the classic Rosie pose, snap a shot, and post it your social media to spread the spirit of strength and solidarity,” Pearsall said. “It can be just you, or a group shot – doesn’t matter. Simply share any real-life Rosies’ stories in your world.”
