Total membership as of Dec. 31, 2020, dropped year-over-year for the first time in decades.
Eight Sons of The American Legion detachments achieved all-time highs for membership in 2020.
The detachments of Puerto Rico, South Dakota, Mississippi, North Carolina, Iowa, Wisconsin, Oklahoma, and South Carolina reached all-time highs in membership. Those eight and 12 other detachments — Hawaii, Philippines, Idaho, Alabama, Louisiana, France, Montana, Florida, Georgia, Arizona, Tennessee, and Illinois — achieved 100 percent membership by Dec. 31.
As of Dec. 31, 2020, there were 363,313 members of the SAL, down from 375,540 at the end of 2019 — a 3.3 percent decrease in total membership that was likely in large part due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The 2020 membership renewal rate was 87.09 percent, with 327,051 renewals reported as of Dec. 31.
