Ten students receive $20,000 Legion Samsung Scholarship

The Samsung American Legion Scholarship is available for Boys State and Girls State attendees and is used toward undergraduate studies.

The 2015 Samsung American Legion Scholarship recipients were announced Thursday during the Legion's Fall Meetings in Indianapolis. The 10 recipients will each receive $20,000 for undergraduate studies; an additional 88 finalists will be awarded $852 each.

The 10 Samsung Scholars are:

  • Kaden Shawn McArthur of Wellsville, Utah
  • Michael McFarland of Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.
  • Isaac Logeman of St. Cloud, Minn.
  • Grant L. Moles of Cook, Neb.
  • Calvin Isch of Bluffton, Ind.
  • Katherine Mossburg of Bridgeport, W.Va.
  • Curtis Colby Leonard of Surfside Beach, S.C.
  • Nicholas Van Slooten of Bentonville, Ark.
  • Devon Kurtz of Westfield, Mass.
  • Meghan Slattery of Bayport, N.Y.

The Samsung American Legion Scholarship is available for high school juniors who participate in the current session of Boys State or Girls State and are direct descendants (or legally adopted children) of wartime veterans eligible for American Legion membership. The Samsung scholarship awards up to $20,000 for undergraduate studies (e.g.,room and board, tuition and books), and each applicant is selected according to his or her involvement in school and community activities, academic record and financial need. Since 1996, the Samsung American Legion Scholarship has awarded nearly $5.5 million in scholarship grants to eligible applicants.
