Health concerns over national health emergency leads to cancellation of charity event; American Legion Riders urged to continue supporting children of fallen, disabled veterans.
Due to health concerns amidst the coronavirus pandemic, American Legion leadership has decided to cancel the 2020 American Legion Legacy Run.
The Legacy Run, which debuted in 2006, raises money for The American Legion Legacy Scholarship Fund. The fund provides college money for the children of U.S. military personnel killed on active duty on or after Sept. 11, 2001, as well as children of post-9/11 veterans with a combined VA disability rating of 50 percent or higher.
Calling it a “tough decision,” National American Legion Riders Advisory Committee Chairman Mark Clark announced the cancellation via video. “As a Rider I know you’re disappointed, as am I. But I also know as a Rider that you’ll pick up the challenge right where you’re at and focus on making sure we don’t abandon the children of the fallen, and the children of those who have come home carrying both the physical and invisible scars of war.”
Clark stressed the importance of the Legacy Fund and encouraged Legion Riders to continue their efforts to support the fund. “I’m counting on you to be energetic and enthusiastic about finding ways to raise that money locally,” he said. “If your post, district or department has a scheduled activity directly related to raising money for the Legacy Fund – and it’s safe to do so – I encourage you to participate.”
Clark also discussed the possibility of some kind of virtual Legacy Run-related activities and urged Legion Riders to check The American Legion’s national website regularly for updates, while also noting donations to the Legacy Fund can be made online.
