Hundreds of veterans receiving assistance and Jimmie Johnson’s best INDYCAR finish highlight today’s offerings.

1.   After a two-year hiatus because of the pandemic, American Legion Post 67 in Cary, N.C., was at it again over the weekend. On Day 1 of its Veterans Benefits Live event, more than 400 veterans were provided some form of assistance with issues they’re having with the Department of Veterans Affairs.

2.   Returning to a track where he had unparalleled success in NASCAR, Jimmie Johnson showed the potential for the Carvana Racing/American Legion No. 48 car on oval tracks this season. In his first INDYCAR oval race, Johnson had his best finish ever in open-wheel racing, taking sixth place in the XPEL 375 at the Texas Motor Speedway on Sunday. Follow along Johnson, Alex Palou and Tony Kanaan as they represent The American Legion this season. Check out the schedule to see when and where they will be racing.

3.   Ukrainian officials defiantly rejected a Russian demand that their forces in Mariupol lay down arms and raise white flags Monday in exchange for safe passage out of the besieged strategic port city.

4.   The Marine Corps has identified four Marines killed during a training accident in northern Norway last Friday. All four were assigned to Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 261, Marine Aircraft Group 26, 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing at Marine Corps Air Station New River, N.C.

5.     With the Department of Veterans Affairs conducting reviews to ensure that caregiver program participants meet new eligibility requirements introduced last year, as many as 6,000 people may find out this month they no longer will receive the caregiver support some have relied upon for years as they manage the residual wounds of war that continue to shape their lives.
