Georgia Legion post will host annual Salute to Heroes
Legion family members from American Legion Post 154 in Tybee Island, Ga., participate in the 2015 Tybee Salutes Heoroes parade.

Military and veteran families are invited to Tybee Island, Ga., for a weekend of fun in the sun.

Veterans Day doesn’t just occur on Nov. 11 each year. Residents of Tybee Island, Ga., many of whom are veterans, take care of each other and fellow veterans every day. Over the course of the past three years, they set aside one special weekend – chock-full of fun in the sun – to honor the brave men and women who took an oath to defend the country.

Legion family members from Tybee Island American Legion Post 154 will join forces with local community partners and open the doors of their businesses, hotels and rental homes to troops currently serving, veterans and their family members Nov. 11-14.

This year’s festivities and accommodations will provide participants with access to the beach and various family friendly events. Lodging costs will be free for those selected to participate, but there is a $125 housekeeping fee, which is a reduced rate for the stay on Tybee. A scholarship is available to cover the fee for families who are in need of financial assistance.

“The town is a great place to unwind and relax,” said Chuck Bolen, commander of Post 154. “People really enjoyed it last year because it provided them the opportunity to spend time with their families.”

In similar style to last year’s event, Post 154 will kick-off the third annual Tybee Salutes Heroes Parade Nov. 12. and a military family celebration dinner at the post Nov. 13.

“We are so happy and excited for the active and former military personnel and their families to be here on Tybee,” said Sharon Shaver, Tybee Salutes Heroes co-chair. “Our goal is to honor them and show Tybee’s continued support for our troops, past and present.”
