Country music star Michael Peterson conducts two public service announcements on why the Legacy Scholarship Fund is important to our military families.

In effort to raise donations for The American Legion Legacy Fund, Legacy spokesman Michael Peterson recently conducted a 30-second and 98-second public service announcement promoting the importance of the scholarship, which ensures children of U.S. servicemembers killed on active duty on or after Sept. 11, 2001, have the opportunity to attend college. DVDs containing the two PSAs have been distributed to American Legion National Executive Committee members and department adjutants to use at their discretion.

“Sometimes giving money doesn’t seem like a big deal, but when you meet the young person whose life was changed, who went to college without having to worry about it, who got the help and assistance they would have received from their mom or their dad, you see the gratitude in their eyes,” Peterson says in one of the PSAs. “There’s no way to put a value on that. That is what your contribution does.”

Since its establishment in 2004, The American Legion Legacy Scholarship has awarded 58 scholarships, totaling $191,970. The renewable scholarship helps high school seniors preparing to attend college, or graduates working toward an undergraduate degree, with the expense of tuition, books, room and board, and other supplies needed for college.

Additionally, word about the two new Legacy Fund PSAs is being sent to Legion Riders, who are preparing for the upcoming Legion Legacy Run that begins in Indianapolis on Aug. 21 and ends Aug. 25 in Minneapolis, the site of the 2011 American Legion National Convention. The 2010 Legacy Run raised more than $634,000 for The American Legion Legacy Scholarship Fund, bringing the Legacy Run’s donation total in five years to more than $2 million.
