David Jr., and more. The clickable digi-mag is available through MyLegion.org.
• Jesse Iwuji describes his journey from playing football at the Naval Academy to racing in NASCAR’s Xfinity Series, as well as his plans to bring more diversity to motorsports. “We want to bring in all different folks, give them the opportunity and see where they take it,” Iwuji says. • In “The Great Bicycle Experiment,” Tennessee Legionnaire James Crutchfield describes how a group of Army officers and Buffalo Soldiers crossed nearly half the country to test the potential of two-wheelers for military transportation. Plus, an interview with Buffalo Soldier descendant and re-enactor Bobby McDonald, who will help lead this year’s quasquicentennial commemorations of the Iron Riders’ historic trek.
• In a Q&A about his book “The Immortals: The World War II Story of Five Fearless Heroes, the Sinking of the Dorchester, and an Awe-inspiring Rescue,” author Steven Collis shares the often-overlooked story of Coast Guard petty officer Charles W. David Jr., who sacrificed his life to help save 93 survivors – and may have been a divine answer to the Four Chaplains’ prayers.
• In “Lessons From the Fall,” Alan W. Dowd explains how America’s Cold War with the Soviet Union can guide its efforts to deter this century’s communist behemoth: the People’s Republic of China. “The broad contours of these conflicts – the divergent systems and ideologies, the surging confidence and duplicitous character of the enemy, the stakes for America and the free world, the enemy’s capacity to challenge America across every domain and region – are strikingly similar,” he writes.
• American Legion posts nationwide immediately came to the aid of victims of December’s devastating tornadoes in Kentucky, sending trailers full of food, clothes, tools and money. Watch a video here.
• National Commander Paul E. Dillard reiterates The American Legion’s call for expedited U.S. citizenship through military service: “For thousands of immigrants who have put their lives on the line in honorable service to our country, it is a privilege that should be extended freely and without reservation.”
• Travel writer Lyn Mettler spotlights five great military and veterans museums, including the U.S. Army Airborne & Special Operations Museum in Fayetteville, N.C., the National Veterans Memorial and Museum in Columbus, Ohio, and Philadelphia’s Museum of the American Revolution.
