Remembrance can take the shape of towers, gardens and more.
Educational institutions across the country maintain memorials and monuments to their veteran students and alumni, as seen on The American Legion’s memorial database.
Duquesne University Victory Garden, Pittsburgh: “Statue of Our Lady of Victory in honor of students, alumni and their families who served in World War II. Bronze plaques honoring those who served in Korea, Vietnam, Grenada, Panama and the Persian Gulf War were added at later dates.”
Memorial Bell Tower, North Carolina State University, Raleigh, N.C.: “At 115 feet tall, this memorial contains 1,400 tons of concrete and sits on a 700-ton concrete base. The Bell Tower does not actually contain bells, but rather speakers that are controlled from nearby Holladay Hall. On the cornerstone of the Bell Tower: DEDICATED BY THE ALUMNI TO THE GLORY OF ALMIGHTY GOD AND IN MEMORY OF THOSE WHO SERVED THEIR COUNTRY IN THE WAR.”
Nuclear Energy sculpture, University of Chicago, Chicago: “The memorial was dedicated to the first controlled release of nuclear energy on Dec. 2, 1942. The dedication [on Dec. 2, 1967] took place on the site of the sculpture,” which was done by the famed Henry Moore.
Pittsburg State University Veterans Memorial Amphitheater, Pittsburg, Kan.: “The PSU Veterans Memorial is made up of two interlocking crescent-shaped earthen berms. The berms encircle a lower amphitheater, creating a quiet, secluded space. Visitors arrive on a broad plaza made up of granite pavers inscribed with the names of veterans and a wall bearing the seals of the five military branches. Upon entering the amphitheater, visitors will see two large bronze sculptures representing military strength on the east side and world peace on the west. Stretching across the back of the amphitheater is a black granite half-scale replica of the Vietnam Wall. In the center is a tall, stone clad 'architrave' flanked on either side by walls bearing famous quotes about service and sacrifice.”
University of Nevada – Las Vegas Veterans Memorial, Las Vegas: “This memorial is dedicated to all veterans in the Las Vegas community. The memorial is a traditional rifle for a fallen military member and was installed next to Artemus Ham Concert Hall, on the grounds of UNLV, next to the Freedom Tree that was planted in 1972.”
