Greetings from American Legion Post 28 in Spartanburg, S.C. (Station KN4YQL). This is my first time reporting our operation success.
Since we started our comm operations using our own call signs on Aug. 3, 2020, we have sent out 160 QSL cards. This includes four complimentary cards (no contact) as: a thank-you to K9TAL; the N2GE repeater owner thanking him for allowing us (KN4YQL) use of the Mt. Mitchell repeater for our net schedule; our one other South Carolina American Legion station (KA3JRM for David M. Goodman) in Conway as a hello; and a ham operator we recently lost when he moved to Evansville, Ind.
Out of these 160 contacts (minus the four complimentary), I recorded two or three couples I listed separately, but only sent one card to their home address.
The 7.267 MHz wasn’t our choice! Whoever designated it, we’re trying to make contacts there during our operating schedule. However, we’re leaving this HF frequency open for change. I have been offered to join in with other net operations in that general frequency area. Choosing a declared HF frequency to announce and stay with has been difficult to determine!
Our operators are:
Calvin E. Bridges – KJ4HGT (myself)
Casey E. Bridges - WX4DRG (participates with our station upgrading but remains a digital comm operator only)
Del Krause - W5NAP
Gordon Graves – No license (new member studying to test for his license)
Roger Hill - KW4EMF
Paul Leary - W4PML
Karen Marmet - KF4BLF
Arthur C. Patterson III - KE4EAN
Also we’re hopeful for Woodrow D. Wykel - KN4KAS, who often visits with us. I’m hoping he will join our post and participate with our comm contacts.
Most of our contacts are by the N2GE repeater at Mt. Mitchell, N.C., and many of them are regulars who check in with us most regularly.
Future plans are to get more operators to join us and begin operating longer hours and days. Improve with our antenna arrangements, and ask for permission to erect a 50’ self-standing tower in August 2023 (three years after we started operating).
We may start working digital if we can find operators interested in doing that.
Calvin, KJ4HGT
