The following announcements were read.
Item: FCC Proposes to Institute Amateur Radio Application Fees
[From The ARRL Letter of September 3, 2020] “Amateur radio licensees would pay a $50 fee for each amateur radio license application if the FCC adopts rules it proposed [recently]. Included in the FCC's fee proposal are applications for new licenses, renewal and upgrades to existing licenses, and vanity call sign requests. Excluded are applications for administrative updates, such as changes of address, and annual regulatory fees.”
For more information about this matter, go to www.arrl.org and click on ARRL Letter on the left of the page, and see the Sept. 3, 2020 edition.

Item: National Commander’s Updates
On a regular basis, American Legion National Commander Bill Oxford offers his “National Commander’s Update” to members via the Legion website [www.legion.org]. Here is an edited version of this month’s updates.

4 September 2020
In addition to advocating for veterans every day in the halls of Congress, The American Legion is constantly serving communities across America and overseas. In August alone, your American Legion Operation Comfort Warriors program awarded $46,000 in grants to help meet the needs of wounded, injured, or ill military personnel. Additionally, The American Legion awarded $116,771 in national youth scholarships; and $13,100 was awarded in National Emergency Fund grants to assist individual members and posts of The American Legion in the aftermath of natural disasters. Veterans’ benefits claims specialists from The American Legion had 202 appeals ruled in favor of the veteran. Not bad for one month’s work.

3 September 2020
September is recognized as Suicide Prevention Month, although The American Legion is committed to bringing awareness to prevent these tragedies whenever they occur. More than 20 veterans a day commit suicide and stopping these needless deaths should be a priority for all of us. I applaud the efforts of the President’s Roadmap to Empower Veterans and End a National Tragedy of Suicide (PREVENTS).
If you or someone you know is having thoughts of suicide, please call the Veterans Crisis Line at 1-800-273-8255 and press 1, or text 838255. You can also chat online at www.veteranscrisisline.net/get-help/chat.
