Item: American Legion membership eligibility dates revised
On Tuesday, July 30, 2019, President Donald J. Trump signed into law S. 504, the LEGION Act, extending the recognized wartime era for American Legion membership eligibility back to Dec. 7, 1941.
The LEGION Act — Let Everyone Get Involved in Opportunities for National Service Act — fills in the gaps of war eras and redefines The American Legion’s membership eligibility dates, beginning with the bombing of Pearl Harbor and continuing until it is determined the United States is no longer in a state of war.
Now that the legislation has been signed, The American Legion’s eligibility criteria immediately changes from seven war eras to two: April 6, 1917, to Nov. 11, 1918, and Dec. 7, 1941 to a time later determined by the federal government. No other restrictions to American Legion membership are changed.
The LEGION Act opens the door for approximately [4+] million veterans to access American Legion membership, the Legion programs and the Legion benefits for which they previously had not been eligible.
“Recognizing the service of these wartime veterans is the right thing do and it is long overdue,” National Commander Brett Reistad said. “Moreover, we are proud to welcome any of the [4+] million living veterans from the previously unrecognized periods into our organization and call them ‘Legionnaires.’”
More information about this change in American Legion membership eligibility is on The American Legion website atwww.legion.org.
Item: EchoLink operations from the 2019 American Legion National Convention
This year The American Legion will call to order its 101st National Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana, August 23 - 29, 2019.
While this convention is the Legion’s 101st, this year is the 100th birthday of the Legion, which was founded in the wake of World War I, March 1919. As party to this special observance, the Legion’s radio club, call sign K9TAL, will conduct special event operations daily from 1330Z - 1830Z, from Friday, August 23 to Tuesday, August 27 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the organization.
Contact can be made via the EchoLink node *TALARC*, and through All-Star Link TALARC Hub Node 49465. Again, contact is via the EchoLink Conference node *TALARC*, or via the All-Star Link TALARC Hub Node 49465.
Item: Most recent TALARC net operations
Many of you participating in today’s net are likely familiar with the several TALARC nets, national or regional, that are conducted each month. For those who may be on this net for the first time – and as a reminder for all here today – I want to acquaint you with the two most recent TALARC net start-ups.
First, a few months ago a new EchoLink Conference node, designated as *TALARC*, began operations with a net each second Wednesday of the month at 0400 UTC, courtesy of Shannon, W6SPY, and Idaho Post 155 Amateur Radio Club, call sign N7ALR. The node is in continuous operation and can be accessed at just about any time. Most important, this conference node, thanks to N7ALR, is available to any TALARC club or American Legion post that would like to conduct scheduled nets within their department, within their county, or within their Legion district. This arrangement can provide the means for regular communications among TALARC members in your area or throughout your state. For more information, contact Shannon, W6SPY, through k9tal@legion.org.
Second, a new All-Digital Voice Net – begun in July -- now operates every Thursday evening at 0000 UTC from TALARC station K5TAL at Mississippi American Legion Post 1992. A program titled QuadNet Array, allows various forms of digital voice to be routed to a common channel/node. As such, users of DMR, D-Star, System Fusion, and other proprietary digital voice modes can communicate with one another. It allows DV Dongle and hotspot users to communicate likewise. This new net will allow any licensed ham of any license class to join in on weekly roundtable discussions. The net is listed on the QuadNet Network site atwww.openquad.net. The site has information explaining its operation and use. It does not require registration.
