Item: Hamvention 2019
Later this month, on May 17-19, The American Legion Amateur Radio Club will operate a booth during this year’s Hamvention in Xenia, Ohio. If you plan to attend, be sure to stop and say “hello” at the TALARC booth. It is Booth Number 6702, which is located in Building 6, just inside the main gate. If you can give an hour or two of your time while at Hamvention, the Legion headquarters staff could use your help with booth operations. Contact Josh, KD9DHX, in advance via K9TAL@legion.org to schedule your participation, or stop by the booth on arrival at Xenia and let Josh know your availability.
Item: Field Day coming June 21-23
Instituted in 1933 to demonstrate amateur radio’s emergency preparedness capabilities while away from an established station, Field Day remains the most popular event in ham radio, with more than 40,000 operators taking part last summer. It’s a pretty good guess that there are a great number of individual TALARC members – even Legion radio clubs – will participate in the event, conducted annually on the fourth weekend of June.
All TALARC members are encouraged to be part of local Field Day activities. If you as an individual or your TALARC club are planning to join with events in your area, please take a few minutes to relate your experiences with K9TAL to Legion National Headquarters. A couple of pictures with a little explanation and identification of the people will allow posting of your participation on the Legion’s national website. Send photos and amplifying information to k9tal@legion.org.
Item: Maryland American Legion radio club looking for a favor from other TALARC clubs
American Legion Post 275 in Glen Arden, Md., has supported an amateur radio club for many years, well before TALARC became a sanctioned program of the Legion at the national level. In 2011, when TALARC was established, the group at Post 275 requested and received the call sign N3TAL.
They have operated regularly from their post home, but from areas that weren’t specifically designated as a radio room. Well, that’s now changed. They’ve acquired space within the post that is now designated as the N3TAL radio room. The folks there have installed equipment and are ready to begin decorating the shack. Here’s what they are asking.
If you are a member of a TALARC club and your club has a QSL card, N3TAL would like to display your club card – prominently – within their new space. The mailing address for N3TAL is on the QRZ.com website.
Item: American Legion releases centennial video documentary
On March 14, the first two episodes of a newly produced centennial video documentary on the history and influence of The American Legion were released.
The video, “To Strengthen a Nation” has professional actors (who are also Legionnaires) crisscrossing the country to discover how The American Legion was formed, grew, and serves the community, state and nation today. Episodes will be posted monthly or bimonthly between now and the 101st National Convention in Indianapolis in late August.
You can view "To Strengthen a Nation: Prelude" and "Episode 1: Formation of The American Legion" on The American Legion's YouTube channel. The documentary also is available on www.legion.org/legiontv under "To Strengthen a Nation."
