Legionnaires bring flag education to middle school students
American Legion Post 103 in St. Mary’s, Pa., provided flag education to eighth graders.

Members of Post 519 in Georgia and Post 103 in Pennsylvania teach flag etiquette to seventh and eighth graders.

As The American Legion continues its Rally Around the Flag initiative to instill respect for and pride in the American flag, two Legion posts recently carried this initiative into the classroom.

Members of the James Hicks American Legion Post 519 and Auxiliary unit in Thomasville, Ga., recently conducted a flag education program for 75 seventh graders at MacIntyre Park Middle School. The post and Auxiliary members recited the Pledge of the Allegiance with the students, shared information on the history of the U.S. flag, as well as the meaning of its colors, stripes and stars. Students even had the opportunity to fold a flag with Post 519 Commander John Murphy and Post Officer Bob Herbert and learn what each of the 13 folds mean.

American Legion Post 103 in St. Mary’s, Pa., provided flag education to the eighth-grade class at St. Mary’s Area Middle School. Post members Steven Bagley, Mickey Grolle and Doug Yetzer educated students about the colors of the flag, how to properly fold, care and display the flag, and how it should be placed when displayed. They too learned the proper placement of the flag at a veteran’s funeral and how a flag is properly retired.
