Moving from a Prescription Drug Plan to a Medicare Advantage Plan

Read how making the switch from a standalone Prescription Drug Plan to a Medicare Advantage Plan can offer significant benefits.

As we continue to support one another through every phase of life, it's essential to stay informed about changes in healthcare options that may impact your well-being. For many veterans, making the switch from a standalone Prescription Drug Plan (PDP) to a Medicare Advantage (MA) Plan can offer significant benefits. In this article, we will break down what this transition means and how it could improve your healthcare experience.

Understanding the basics

Medicare Advantage (Part C) Plans are comprehensive healthcare plans that combine coverage for:

·         Hospital services (Part A)

·         Medical services (Part B)

·         Prescription drug coverage (Part D)

These plans are often more convenient because they bundle coverage into a single plan, and many also include additional benefits like dental, vision, hearing or wellness programs that are not covered under Original Medicare.

Prescription Drug Plans are standalone plans that only cover prescription medications under Medicare Part D. Veterans who rely solely on PDPs may find that while their medications are covered, they still need separate coverage for doctor visits, hospital stays, and other medical services.

Why consider switching to a Medicare Advantage Plan?

1.       All-in-one coverage: With a Medicare Advantage plan, you receive a single, comprehensive policy that includes prescription drugs, along with your medical and hospital coverage. This can make managing your healthcare simpler and more efficient.

2.       Extra benefits: Many Medicare Advantage plans go beyond what Original Medicare and a standalone PDP offer. This can include:

·         Dental, vision, and hearing coverage

·         Wellness programs and fitness memberships (like SilverSneakers)

·         Telehealth services, which can be especially useful for veterans in rural areas

3.       Cost savings: Depending on the Medicare Advantage plan you choose, your out-of-pocket costs for services like doctor visits, hospital stays and prescription drugs may be lower than if you keep separate plans for medical services and medications.

4.       Coordinated care: Some Medicare Advantage plans, particularly Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) or Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) plans, focus on coordinating your care, ensuring that your doctors and specialists are working together to provide the best possible treatment.

Special Considerations for veterans

While many veterans are eligible for healthcare services through the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), it’s important to know that VA benefits and Medicare coverage are separate. If you qualify for both, combining a Medicare Advantage plan with VA benefits could give you even broader access to care.

For example, you might use your VA benefits for prescription medications and a Medicare Advantage plan for other healthcare services, or vice versa. It’s all about finding the right balance for your personal health needs.

Steps to transition

If you're considering making the switch from a Prescription Drug Plan to a Medicare Advantage plan, here are some steps to take:

1.       Evaluate your healthcare needs: Consider your current medical conditions, the medications you take, and any services you use regularly (like dental or vision care).

2.       Compare plans: During Medicare’s annual enrollment period (Oct. 15 – Dec. 7), you can compare different Medicare Advantage plans available in your area.

3.       Speak with a licensed agent: If you're unsure which plan is right for you, speaking with a Medicare expert or a veterans service officer (VSO) can help clarify your options.

4.       Check with the VA: Be sure to understand how your VA benefits will work alongside your Medicare Advantage plan.
