The American Legion Department of Minnesota uses Constant Contact to email its members about membership, program information, legislative news and more. Department of Minnesota Director of Communications Tim Engstrom said they like Constant Contact because it saves money on postage, they can quickly reach members on important news, separate email list groups can be created and more.
“It’s been great,” Engstrom said, adding that it’s easy to grab names and email addresses from your member database and upload to Constant Contact. “I would encourage more departments to use it to save money instead of doing mailings.”
A few of the many ways the Department of Minnesota uses Constant Contact is to:
- Send a PDF version of the Minnesota Legionnaire newsletter.
- Notify members of legislation that they want Legionnaires to call their lawmakers on “and it gets results,” Engstrom said. “Every time we do that, lawmakers say they hear from Legionnaires. So it’s an effective tool for legislation.”
- Send membership renewal notices.
- Provide service officer information.
- Email Minnesota Legion Baseball and softball coaches and parents about the department’s baseball app and more.
“The postage that you could save by using Constant Contact is huge,” said Engstrom, along with the ability to notify all members without having to rely on communication to be forwarded. “If you use Constant Contact, your members get the email notification, and you don't have to worry about somebody not forwarding it to the next group of people. With Constant Contact, you’re getting the message across to your members, at least the ones that have email, and you can ensure that the message gets to where you're trying to get it to. That's the most valuable thing.”
Laura Dean, adjutant and public relations chairperson at Jack Henry Post 1 in Anchorage, Alaska, uses Constant Contact as well.
"We use Constant Contact as a way to easily email all our members at once. Again, smaller posts may not need this, but we have 1,000+ members across all three organizations, so it’s a must for us. We used it to send out our monthly calendar and reminders for important events. Mind you, we try very hard to think strategically about what to email so we don’t spam our members. We want them to want to read our emails, not delete them."
