Apply to compete during The American Legion’s 102nd National Convention in Phoenix in August.

American Legion color guard units are gearing up for this year’s National Color Guard Contest, which will open the 102nd National Convention in Phoenix on Aug. 27.

The contest will start at 4 p.m. in the Phoenix Convention Center, North Building, Exhibition Hall B-E, 300 Level.

There are four classes of competition:
1. Advancing/Retiring Colors
2. Military
3. Military-Open
4. Open

To be considered for the National Commander’s Color Guard, units must compete in either Military or Military-Open and Advancing/Retiring Colors. Units can represent any part of the Legion Family, or have a combination of members in the unit.
Units wanting to compete must commit to marching in the National Convention Parade on Sunday, Aug. 29. Color Guard applications are due to National Headquarters by July 23.

On Aug. 28, the National Concert Band Contest will kick off at 1 p.m. in the Phoenix Convention Center, West Building, Symphony Hall, 100 Level. The event includes the Concert Band and Exhibition Concert Band classes. Competing bands must also commit to the Sunday parade.

Band applications are due by April 30.
