American Legion national commander delivers remarks to join assembly of South Carolina Legislature.
American Legion National Commander James A. LaCoursiere reiterated his organization’s commitment to improve the quality of life for military families as he delivered remarks to a joint assembly of South Carolina lawmakers in the historic state capitol March 5.
“Quality of life issues for our armed service is essential in today’s All Volunteer Force,” he told the assembly packed with state senators and representatives. “We are pleased to see that Joint Base Charleston has an Education Fair scheduled for March 18, an event that is intended to help military families achieve their next level of success.”
Before testifying, LaCoursiere and American Legion Department of South Carolina leaders toured Fort Jackson, Shaw Air Force Base and Patriot’s Village, South Carolina’s newest state-run veterans home, which is scheduled to open later this month.
“This state has always been what we in the Legion call, ‘veteran-friendly.’ And you’re getting even friendlier,” LaCoursiere told the legislature. “Some of the many bills being considered by this legislature deal with issues such as discounted fees at state parks for veterans and property tax relief for surviving spouses (of veterans).
“Most veterans know the Legion as a community grassroots organization. It is what you do here in your state that provides the greatest impact.”
LaCoursiere also used his legislative appearance to salute South Carolina native and Army Sgt. Maj. Thomas Payne. Payne was presented the Medal of Honor by President Trump in 2020 for actions in Iraq which led to the rescue of 75 hostages held by ISIS.
“During his distinguished career, Sgt. Maj. Payne deployed 17 times, including tours in Iraq, Afghanistan and Africa. But it was his actions on October 22, 2015, that are permanently etched among the bravest in military history,” LaCoursiere said.
He concluded his remarks by recognizing South Carolina State Sen. Shane Massey and State Rep. Bobby Cox as The American Legion Department of South Carolina 2025 Outstanding Members of the Legislature.
LaCoursiere said Massey and Cox, “have proven that they are not only great lawmakers, but they are advocates for those who have served.”
