Job fairs span the globe in June

Hiring events for veterans, servicemembers and their families set for locations stateside and abroad.

In June, veterans job fairs will span the world, reaching locations in the continental United States, such as East Rutherford, N.J., and on the opposite side of the globe in East Asia.

The month will begin with a hiring fair on June 3 at Fort Bliss' Centennial Banquet and Conference Center in Fort Bliss, Texas. Prior to the fair, as is standard practice with all Hiring Our Heroes job fairs, event organizers will host a free employment workshop for attendees which teaches the basics of resume writing and interviewing. The workshop also will provide free, one-on-one tutelage and review of résumés.

The following week, Hiring Our Heroes will travel to Japan. On June 8, Yokosuka, Japan, will be the site of a special transition summit event that aims to help transitioning servicemembers at nearby naval base - U.S. Fleet Activities Yokosuka - find employment after they separate. On June 11, a similar transition summit event is set for Okinawa, Japan, to assist transitioning servicemembers at nearby Marine Corps Base Camp Smedley D. Butler.

Servicemembers and employers who are stateside may attend both transition summit events, free of charge, through virtual means at virtualjobscout.org. Both events run from midnight to 4 a.m. EDT and will feature job fairs specifically targeting transitioning troops.

Hiring Our Heroes will also venture from the continental United States on June 5, when it heads to San Juan, Puerto Rico, for a veterans hiring fair.

The month will culminate with two events in the greater New York City area. On June 27, a job fair and employment workshop is set for East Rutherford, N.J., in MetLife Stadium - home of NFL's New York Giants. Co-hosted by the Legion's Department of New Jersey, past hiring events at MetLife have been highly successful. A New York Hiring Expo with the New York Mets will follow on June 30.

Hiring Our Heroes is an initiative of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce that The American Legion supports at the national, department and local levels. Through the initiative, career fairs for veterans, servicemembers and their families are brought to cities and towns around the world. American Legion posts often are host sites for such events.

Attendees to career fairs are encouraged to pre-register, dress in business attire, and come prepared to network or even interview on the spot.
