American Legion Birthday an ideal time for Buddy Checks

Resolution No. 18 urges Legionnaires to conduct Buddy Checks around the organization’s birthday on March 15; resources available to assist those efforts.

Although encouraged year-round, The American Legion National Executive Committee in 2019 passed Resolution 18, which urges members of the American Legion Family around two specific days: Veterans Day in November, and the week surrounding The American Legion Birthday, which takes place March 15.

We’ve created multiple resources available for American Legion posts and Legion Family members who want to reach out to their fellow veterans to engage in conversation, assess risks and direct veterans in need to the appropriate services. Resources are available to help Legionnaires make Buddy Checks at www.legion.org/buddycheck.

The resources include a toolkit that explains the program, provides steps to conducting a successful Buddy Check, gives sample scripts and more; a door hanger that is printer-friendly and can be customized as a leave-behind when Legion Family members visit a veteran who is not a home; a fillable media advisory; and more.

The number of posts engaged in the program and veterans reached each year through Buddy Checks continues to grow, with a record 4,624 American Legion posts conducting Buddy Checks in 2024. As a result, 341,049 veterans were reached by phone, text, email or in person to check on their well-being.
