NSSF corrects mistaken beliefs about VA confiscating firearms

A fact sheet from the Firearm Industry Trade Association dispels misinformation that keeps veterans from seeking mental health or suicide prevention treatment from the VA.

The American Legion’s Be the One mission is to prevent veteran suicide and one of those ways is by destigmatizing the need to ask for help. A reason why veterans may not seek mental health or suicidal treatment from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is the belief that the VA will confiscate their firearms. NSSF, the Firearm Industry Trade Association, has created a fact sheet Correcting Mistaken Beliefs about the VA Confiscating Veterans’ Guns” – that discusses these mistaken beliefs that prevent some veterans from seeking mental health, suicide prevention or other healthcare from the VA.

The fact sheet provides information in a Q&A format about veteran health care, disability claims and gun ownership rights.

“Understanding the facts about this topic can help veterans make informed decisions about seeking the health care they are entitled to,” NSSF President and CEO Joe Bartozzi said in a press release. “This care can range from a routine checkup to a hip replacement to screening for PTSD to mental health care.”

As stated in the press release, NSSF is a supporter of America’s military veterans and has also developed a webpage of other resources for veterans.
