The name change was approved by the National Executive Committee during Fall Meetings.
By Resolution No. 1, Be the One Mental Wellness Committee is now the name of the TBI/PTSD Suicide Prevention Committee. The National Executive Committee of The American Legion passed Resolution No. 1 during the annual Fall Meetings on Oct. 10, which calls for consolidation “of the mission of the TBI/PTSD Suicide Prevention Committee into a new, more broadly focused Be the One Mental Wellness Committee.”
By resolution, the Be the One Mental Wellness Committee will be tasked with reviewing recent trends in veteran suicide as it relates to traumatic brain injury, post-traumatic stress disorder, military sexual trauma, etc., as well as analyzing best practices in veteran suicide prevention that are not currently used by the Department of Defense (DoD) or the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to encourage government agencies like the DoD and VA to adopt them. The Be The One Mental Wellness Committee also will be charged with raising awareness about suicide prevention of veterans and their families and addressing the stigma around asking for help.
Resolution No. 1 supersedes and rescinds Resolution No. 9, Appointment of TBI/PTSD Committee (October 2015) and National Executive Committee Resolution No. 33, TBI/PTSD Suicide Prevention Committee (October 2020).
