The presentation took place after the Army parachute team’s show as part of USAA Military Appreciation Day.
Part of the Army Golden Knights parachute team’s show is the passing of a 14-inch wooden baton between jumpers while they’re in free fall. Once they have landed, the baton is presented to a distinguished member of the audience.
Saturday at the American Legion World Series in Shelby, N.C., Senior Past National Commander John P. “Jake” Comer accepted the baton on behalf of The American Legion.
Comer was brought onto Veterans Field at Keeter Stadium prior to Game 9 of the 2023 ALWS to receive the baton and meet the members of the Golden Knights team.
The appearance by the Army Golden Knights was part of USAA Military Appreciation Day at the ALWS, which included an open house Saturday morning at Shelby Cleveland County Regional Airport in which the community could get up close with the T-28 Warbirds from the Museum of Flight. Those planes did flyovers before games each day of the series.
