Legion staff to distribute care supplies during national convention

Knowing that New Orleans – the host city of the 2024 American Legion National Convention – has a large homeless population, staff from The American Legion Veterans Employment & Education Division (VEED) and its commission will be providing care items to four area facilities that address that issue during the convention.

VEED staff contacted the Disabled Veterans National Foundation (DVNF) in June to request donations for the care bags that have been assembled. Around 300 items were donated, but VEED staff found out later that the supplies weren’t going to be able to be delivered to the Legion’s D.C. office until after the convention.

VEED staff arranged to pick up the items at DVNF’s warehouse in Lanham, Md., on July 27 and then two days later spent an entire day unpacking the supplies and then assembling the care packages.

On Aug. 26, the care packages will be distributed at the following facilities in New Orleans:

VA Southeast Louisiana Healthcare (female shelter/four boxes)

Bastion Community of Resilience (family shelter/11 boxes)

Volunteers of America Men’s Veterans Shelters (four boxes)

Volunteers of America Men’s Veterans Shelters (six boxes).
