The post had the first American Legion ambulance service in the world.
In 1924, 18 members of the David C. Harrison American Legion Post 14 in Smyrna, Del., founded the first American Legion ambulance service in the world. The World War I veterans volunteered their time to transport the sick and injured to hospitals in the town of Smyrna and others, such as Wilmington, Dover and Milford. Post 14’s ambulance service is still in operation and is staffed largely by volunteers. The ambulance service drove Cadillacs in the 1960s to transport patients.
Pictured in the photo is Kelly Polito, a member of Post 14 and a 50-year volunteer for the ambulance service.
