Legion posts stepping up for their communities this weekend

Maine Post 135 hosting veterans resource fair, while Post 66 in Washington is staging a food and warm clothing drive.

Two American Legion posts will be opening their doors this weekend to assist others, with a focus on mental health at one post, and on delivering cold-weather assistance at the other.

In Sabattus, Maine, American Legion Post 135 will host a veterans resource fair from 9 a.m.- 3 p.m. Jan. 20. Multiple resources will be on hand to provide information on mental health questions, as well as to share info on American Legion programs such as the Legion Riders, and other community entities. A Department of Veterans Affairs representative also will be available to answer questions about potential veterans benefits, enrolling in VA health care and more.

And in Washington, Edmonds American Legion Post 66 will be accepting donations of food and cold weather clothing items to assist Snohomish County veterans in need during a drop-off event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Jan. 20.

The post is asking community members to stop by the post with non-perishable food items, as well clothing such as hats, gloves, socks, sweaters and coats. Donated items will be distributed to veterans by the Lynnwood Heroes Café.

“There are over 50,000 veterans in Snohomish County, and many of them need help during winter due to difficult circumstances,” Post 66 Commander Dan Mullene told My Edmonds News.

The post also will accept used American flags, which it will dispose of properly at a later date.
