There are multiple suicide prevention training options to choose from in order to be prepared to intervene safely and confidently when a veteran may be at risk. Each of the methods detailed below are available to participants virtually or in-person. After completing one or more of the training options, participants will be able to assist a veteran who may be in crisis.

FREE VIRTUAL TRAINING

American Legion | Columbia Lighthouse Project Suicide Prevention Training

The American Legion is working with Columbia University on hosting regular training sessions for anyone interested. The highly successful Columbia Lighthouse Project Training walks attendees through steps and questions to ask a veteran to understand whether they need immediate help. American Legion departments are encouraged to reach out to schedule trainings during their summer conventions, mid-winter conferences or other such meetings.

QPR Training

Become a Certified QPR Suicide Prevention Gatekeeper | QPR Institute

This training — which stands for question, persuade, and refer — can be conducted virtually or online. People trained in QPR learn how to recognize the warning signs of a suicide crisis and how to question, persuade and refer someone to help.

Department of Veterans Affairs S.A.V.E. Training

The Department of Veterans Affairs S.A.V.E. training is a free online or in-person course that gives you the tools to help a veteran in crisis or who is having thoughts of suicide. S.A.V.E. stands for
  • S: Signs that indicate a veteran might be thinking about suicide
  • A: Ask the most important question of all, “Are you thinking of killing yourself?”
  • V: Validate the veteran’s experience
  • E: Encourage treatment and expedite getting help
