Since August 2007, country music singer and motivational speaker Michael Peterson has served as the national spokesman for The American Legion Legacy Scholarship Fund, which provides college money for children of military personnel killed on duty since Sept. 11, 2001. In addition to creating public-service announcements on behalf of the campaign, Peterson has donated to the fund $5 from each sale of his "It's Who We Are," DVD.

It's been a busy 2009 in The American Legion. We stood up against a proposal for VA to start billing the insurance companies of service-disabled veterans for care they're supposed to receive at no personal cost. Within days, as national media cast a spotlight on our opposition, the White House withdrew its idea.

On May 7, President Barack Obama released his detailed fiscal 2010 budget request for the Department of Veterans Affairs. The request for all department functions totals $112.8 billion, an increase of $15.1 billion, or 15 percent, from the current year. This is the largest single-year increase in VA's budget in over 30 years. VA mandatory funding is pegged at $56.9 billion, while discretionary program funding is set at $55.9 billion.

Jack Butler Laketon, Ind. Jack Butler of Post 402 (Department of Indiana) passed away May 26 at age 80. He was a Korean War Army veteran. Mr. Butler served as Alternate National Executive Committeeman from 2007 to 2009 and National Distinguished Guests Committee vice chairman from 1997 to 2007.   Frank J. Kosanda Sun City, Ariz. Frank J. Kosanda of Post 6 (Department of North Dakota) passed away May 20 at age 88. He was a World War II Navy veteran.
