For The American Legion, defining the term "public relations," with the words "communication" and "service" seem appropriate. The National Public Relations Division, with offices in Indianapolis, and the Media Relations Manager in Washington, D.C. are responsible at the national level for providing both communication and service to Legion audiences.

Veterans Service Days

A complete guide on organizing, planning and holding Veterans Service Days in your district. The guide includes a media package for your use.

Objectives:

1. To raise public awareness of veterans’ issues to garner attention and support by the public and promote the advocacy of The American Legion.

2. To stimulate grass roots activism in engaging The American Legion family, veterans and their families and the general public in participating in the legislative process by communicating their support of veterans’ issues with legislators.

3. To conduct Veterans Service Days in districts at public locations where service officers can provide assistance, information and support to veterans regarding claims, benefits, rights, and employment assistance.

Hold a 9-11 "Freedom Walk"

If your post is looking for a unique way to mobilize and engage your community in remembering the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, consider organizing a local Freedom Walk.

Every year, the Dept. of Defense has held a commemoration for the victims, survivors and their families and a recognition for our military men and women serving our nation. Last year on 9-11, DoD organized the first "America Supports You" Freedom Walk that began at the Pentagon and culminated on the Nation Mall. More than 15,000 people, including family members of the 9-11 victims, members of Congress, administration officials, federal workers, corporate employees, civic organizations, and citizens from around the country walked to pay tribute to those who lost their lives on 9-11 and to thank our veterans, past and present, for protecting our freedom.

This year, DoD will again hold a Freedom Walk in Washington; however, they are encouraging cities across our nation to do the same to create an appropriate experience for communities to strengthen one another and show support to those personally affected by 9-11.

Who better than Legionnaires can coordinate and motivate their towns to commemorate this important remembrance.
